Owls can’t cage ‘Cats in volleyball setback

COLUMBUS, Miss. – For the second time this season, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team fell prey to Bethel University, this time dropping a 3-0 decision. The Owls lost to the Wildcats by set scores of 16-26, 23-25, 20-25 at Pohl Gym.

Llayne Skinner's seven kills led The W's attack. Skinner also had a healthy attack average of .313 in a team-leading 16 attempts. She also had two assists, an ace and two digs.

Maggie Griggs added five kills. Jasmine Kelly and Micaela Hudgins each chipped in three kills. Hudgins made just one attack error en route to a .400 attack average. She also had a team-best three blocks (two solo).

Kelly had two solo blocks on her ledger, as well.

The Owls setter tandem of Camryn Johnson and Hannah Duran combined for 19 assists (10 and nine, respectively). Johnson was also credited with two of the team's four service aces.

In set one, the two teams stayed close and a Kelly kill had the Owls within two at 11-9. Four straight winners by the Wildcats opened up a 15-9 cushion and the visitors never looked back.

Set two saw Bethel lead early, 4-1 and 7-3, before the resilient Owls kept pecking away before finally catching the 'Cats at 10-10. Bethel led 18-15 when The W reeled off four-consecutive winners to go on top, 19-18.

The two teams swapped leads and, with the score 22-22, Bethel won three of the final four points for the set two win.

The Owls fell behind in set three, 7-2, but came back and managed to stay within four points until a spurt by the Wildcats gave the visitors their largest lead, 17-10. The W got to within two, 18-16, but could get no closer in losing the third set.

The Owls next travel to Jackson, Miss., to face Millsaps College on Friday (Oct. 29/7 p.m.).
