JACKSON, Miss. – A strong defensive effort from
Madison Suggs and
Llayne Skinner was not enough to keep the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team from suffering a 3-0 road loss at Millsaps College. The Owls lost to the Majors by set scores of 11-25, 12-25, 18-25 at the Hanger Dome.
Suggs had 16 digs and Skinner 11. Their 27 combined digs accounted for well more than half of The W's 47 digs as a team. Each had just one receiving error in the match. Skinner also chipped in three kills.
Maggie Griggs led the Owls offensive attack with six kills and a team-best .174 attack average.
Jasmine Kelly added four kills to The W coffers. She also had a pair of solo blocks to her credit.
Setter
Hannah Duran had a balanced effort. Duran had nine assists, while also making nine digs. She also served up one of the three Owl aces (
Madison Suggs and
Camryn Johnson had the other two).
Millsaps easily controlled the first two sets. However, in the third, The W appeared to find its footing versus the Majors.
Set Three featured seven ties – the last of which was at 15-15 – and four lead changes. A run by MC made it 19-15. But kills by MUW's Kelly and Griggs, followed by a Majors attack error, allowed The W to climb to within a point, 19-18.
Unfortunately for the visiting Owls, Millsaps would close out the set, and match, with six-consecutive points.
The W will next travel to Lane College on Thursday, November 4 (6 p.m.).
