Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball battles NCAA II foe strong, but comes up short

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women volleyball gave NCAA Division II opponent Lane College a run for its money, but ended up on the short end of 3-1 final score. The Owls were defeated by the Dragons, with set scores of 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 26-28, at Pohl Gymnasium.

After a nip-and-tuck early portion of set one, The W eventually opened up a 16-10 lead. Maggie Griggs served up five-consecutive winners, including three-straight aces, as the Owls pulled away.

Later in the set, a side out made it 17-14 in favor of MUW. But Madison Suggs was serving as the team created some breathing room by winning the next four points, 21-14, and closing out the Dragons by the 25-17 margin.

Lane responded by winning the final three sets of the night, but not without some effort to overcome the Owls' battling spirit. After the Dragons jumped out to a 5-0 advantage, MUW caught the guests at 14-14. From that point on, there were eight ties and eight lead changes down the stretch, with LC winning 25-23.

In set three, The W opened up a 10-5 lead behind Griggs' five-consecutive winners. The Dragons got a side out and then took a lead they wouldn't relinquish with seven-straight points of their own.

In the fourth set, the Owls burst out of the gate, 5-0, only to get caught by Lane at 10-10. Neither team would lead by more than two points the balance of that set, with the Dragons winning, 28-26.

Jasmine Kelly topped the MUW attackers with eight kills. She also had three of MUW's four solo blocks in the match.

Llayne Skinner added six kills and nine digs. Sarah White, Hannah Duran and Griggs all booked five kills. Duran chipped in 10 assists and nine digs, while Griggs drew a total of five aces for The W.

Camryn Johnson led the team with 14 assists, while making six digs, as well. Suggs' 25 digs led all players in the match.
