COLUMBUS, Miss. - An aggressive attack by the Mississippi University for Women proved to no avail versus LaGrange College in a 4-1 home loss. The Owls (4-6) out-shot the visiting Panthers by a 16-10 margin.
The day had suspicious beginnings for The W. The hosts gave LaGrange its first goal of the day on an own goal, when attempting a defensive header to clear the ball was misdirected into the MUW net in the fourth minute of action.
The Panthers would add goals in the sixth and 22
nd minutes to lead 3-0. The Owls got on the board at the 27:10 mark. Senior
Leah Anderson (Leyland, U.K.) dribbled through the LC defense and drilled the ball past Panther goalkeeper Leila Moss.
The tally was Anderson's fifth of the season.
The 3-1 score stood trough the balance of the first half. The Owls' defense kept the Panthers caged until the 70
th minute, when the visitors added a goal to make it the 4-1 final.
The W goalie
Caitlyn Fox (Saraland, Ala.) – starting in place of injured senior
Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss.) – had four saves and was charged with all four goals.
Anderson put all three of her shot attempts on-goal. Adriana Parsons (Springdale, Ark.) took five of the Owls shot tries and teammate
Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.), a senior, attempted four shots, three on-frame.
The W will look to salvage a match for the weekend on Sunday (12 p.m.), when it hosts the University of Dallas at the Columbus Soccer Complex.
