PENSACOLA, Fla. - Despite its strongest attacking effort of the season, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team lost a pair of matches at Pensacola Christian College – 2-3 and 1-3 – on Saturday afternoon. The Owls were defeated by set scores of 25-22, 14-25, 25-17, 21-25, 12-15 in a marathon first match, followed by match two with scores of 13-25, 25-22, 22-25, 11-25.
In match one, The W's 50 kills were 13 more than they had amassed in any other match of 2021. A trio of MUW players had double-digit kill totals, but none had a bigger match than freshman
Hannah Duran (Madison, Miss.).
Duran did a little bit of everything for the Owls, starting with her "triple-double" with a match-leading 15 kills (and a .462 attack average), 13 assists and 25 digs. She was also among the Owls leaders with three blocks and two service aces.
Jasmine Kelly (Louisville, Miss.) and
Maggie Griggs (Tupelo, Miss.) were the other players with double figures in kills, with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Kelly also hit with purpose, rolling up a .367 attack average, along with two blocks.
Sophomore
Madison Suggs (Caledonia, Miss.) topped the defense with 26 digs. Sophomore setter
Camryn Johnson (Caledonia, Miss.) had 20 assists, while amassing nine digs and a pair of aces, as well.
In match two, Griggs and Kelly each booked eight kills.
Sarah White Biloxi, Miss.) led the Owls with nine kills and freshman
Micaela Hudgins (Columbus, Miss.) added five kills off The W bench. Kelly chipped in four blocks and two aces to the MUW cause.
Duran had a double-double of 26 assists and 13 digs. Suggs also had 13 digs, but it was
Sydney Horel (Madison, Miss.) with a team-best 15 digs.
