Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rebounding, shooting woes sink Owls on the road

SEWANEE, Tenn. -  It was a tough go for the Mississippi University for Women men's basketball team versus Sewanee: The University of the South in its matchup against the hosts of the Lou Varnell Classic. The Owls (0-4) found themselves absorbing an 82-57 setback at the hands of the Tigers (2-4) at Juhan Gymnasium.

For The W's first-year head coach Dean Burrows, his team's mistakes resulting in the loss were obvious.

"We got outrebounded on the glass again - twice in two games now - after holding our own and then some in our first two games," Burrows explained. "Sewanee, like Belhaven the other night, had 4-5 guys who could spread the floor and they moved the ball and found the open man, where we would over penetrate and get tied up. They do what they do daily in practice and it carried over to the floor tonight. We do what we do and it did not. We can't worry about or focus on what our opposition does until we consistently do and execute what we do daily."

"On a positive note, our turnovers came down again tonight but our assists are nowhere near what we expect them to be, which shows some selfishness on our part. Davon Kennick's stat line from tonight won't raise any eyebrows, but those in our locker room know what he did out there tonight, which was exactly what we asked of him as far as energy, fronting the post, denying elbow entries. I'm proud of how he stepped up tonight."

The W also struggled somewhat with its shooting, hitting 19-of-60 shots overall (31 percent) and a sluggish 6-for-26 from beyond the arc. The rebounding differential Burrows spoke of was 42-31 in favor of the Tigers.

Ddallen Bailey led MUW with 11 points, the only member of the squad to reach double-digit points. Bailey was a creditable 4-of-9 shooting – 1-of-2 from long range -  and pulled down three rebounds.

Milos Zeradjanin and Kenterrius Davison each booked nine points. Nathan Reed came off the bench to tally seven points and corral a team-best five rebounds.

JaQuan Hines four rebounds, two assists and two more blocks. Hines now has 13 blocks in the four Owls' games.

MUW will play again on Saturday (Nov. 19) at 1 p.m. versus Birmingham-Southern College.

"We have a quick turnaround now as we get a really good Birmingham-Southern team who's coming off a few losses of their own and took (NCAA) D1 Lipscomb to the brink," Burrows said. "To say that I'm interested to see how we respond is an understatement."
