Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Owls softball team took the field at William Carey University in competition for the first time since the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a delayed start to the current season due to inclement weather, The W was unable to keep up with the experience Crusaders to drop both games of the doubleheader 8-0 in five innings of play.
GAME ONE
William Carey scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning to knock-off The W softball team in its opening game of the 2021 season. With early runs in their opening at-bat, the Crusaders defense silenced the Owls for the 8-0 victory.
Mary Grace Turner doubled to deep left-center for the two RBIs to start William Carey's scoring effort. The Crusaders would continue to connect with the ball for a total of eight runs in the opening inning. After a string of scoring, Dee Dee West grounded out to
Jessica Deming at short to close the side.
Against the Crusaders bullpen, The W could not land any hits to remain scoreless throughout the competition. Owls relief pitcher
MacKenzie Denton returned the favor, taking over in the second inning to pitch 3.0 innings for five hits against with no runs.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day played out differently than the first half of the doubleheader. The Owls defense held William Carey to a 1-0 lead for the first three innings of the game.
At the bottom of the fourth inning, the Crusaders scored their second run and added six to close out the game in the fifth.
The Owls bats fared better in the second competition, with
Megan Cummins and MacKenzie going 1-for-2 at the plate. Despite the improvement, The W was unable to convert the effort into runs.
On the mound, Denton took the first three innings for five hits against and one earned run. Following her appearance,
Amelia Stalter,
Kaitlyn Parrish, and
Marely Poole each had a turn in the circle.
Up Next
The Owls will return to action tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 25, when they host John A. Logan College in a doubleheader scrimmage at noon.
There will be limited attendance with each Owl student-athletes and coaches allowed two guests. Visiting fans will not be permitted entry.
