Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Unsuccessful in Exhibition Play

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team was unable to pick up a victory in dual exhibition matches versus Wallace State Community College Wednesday afternoon. The junior varsity team fell 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-5) in the first match of the day, while the varsity team dropped its match 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-14) to conclude the day.

Junior Varsity vs. WSCC

The Owls fell victim to the delayed practices and matches due to the inclement weather last week and a greater delayed season due to the pandemic. The team, composed primarily of newcomers, was unable to adapt to the more veteran team's pace, a team that has been competing since the fall semester.

The W struggled with errors, hitting at just -.231, to fall behind early in each set. Freshman Jadelyn Trice led the team with two kills, and Madison Suggs led in digs with six.

Varsity vs. WSCC

The varsity team was better competition for the Lions and saw improvement over the season's first two performances. The Owls increased its hitting percentage to -.014 and created more opportunities to score with 73 total attacks.

Newcomer Ricki-Jill Burrough led the charge in match two with six total kills. She was followed by senior Tori Weir and sophomore Taniya Cavett, who recorded three and two, respectively. On the ball's defensive side, sophomore defensive specialist Lacey Evans played low to record seven digs, and Iyana Canada and Burrough recorded one block each.

The Owls will return to action tomorrow when they travel to Clinton, Miss., to take on NCAA Division II opponent Mississippi College. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
