COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W (0-3) fell, 3-0, to the University of West Alabama (1-0) on Sunday afternoon at Sprint Mart Field. The Lady Tigers grabbed two goals in the first half and an additional one in the second to earn their first victory of the 2020-21 season.
The Owls looked strong through the first 14 minutes of the game, appearing ready to stand up to a powerful UWA offense, until freshman forward Brekel Tibbs was able to plant a shot in the top-left of the goal with an assist by Lucy Horn.
The Tigers second goal came late in the first half as Anele Komunai scored unassisted with just five minutes left before the break. Kaylah Butterworth recorded the game's last goal with less than four minutes remaining to give UWA the 3-0 advantage.
Freshman keeper
Caitlyn Fox recorded her first start of the season to spend the entire 90 minutes in the Owls goal. The Saraland, Ala. native prevented four goals while allowing four.
Offensively,
Leah Anderson was the only Owl to land a shot on goal while
Hannah Helms tallied a single shot.
If the weather holds up, The W will be back in action on Thursday, Feb.11. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
