Men's Soccer Shuts Out Andrew College in Exhibition Play

COLUMBUS, Miss. – For the first time since 2019, the Owls men's soccer team saw action at home on Sprint Mart Field inside the Columbus Soccer Complex on Monday, March 29. Although it was only an exhibition match, The W played well and defeated Andrew College 2-0 for a bright spot on a slow and short season.

The W victory was highlighted by a first-half goal by Hunter Holdiness and a second-half goal by Asahel Salgado from Kyle Rodriguez on the offensive end, as well as a defensive performance anchored by senior John McGee.

The Owls dominated the shot count 7-3 in the first half, and it paid off with a 10-minute goal by Holdiness to break an early stalemate. The senior from Vicksburg, Miss., found the back of the net goal during a struggle inside the box, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

With over 20 minutes remaining, Salgado put the Blazers out of reach for good. The sequence began with a dribble down the field by Rodriguez, who fired the ball into a crowd of defenders. Salgado met the ball and slipped it past Andrew goalkeeper Nigel Omondi.

In total, The W attempted 11 shots while the Tigers recorded 13.

McGee earned the shutout, recording six saves in the process.

The W is scheduled for one more contest before ending the 2021 spring season. The Owls are slated for a rematch with Andrew College on Thursday, April 1, at 4 p.m. CT back at Spring Mart Field.
