Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls collar Scotties, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Miss. – A big second half propelled the Women's Soccer team from the Mississippi University for Women to a 3-1 win over Agnes Scott College at the Columbus Soccer Complex. The win improved the Owls to 1-1 on the young season, while the Scotties fell to 0-4.

"Overall, I am proud of the team for coming out on top and getting the win," The W Head Coach Catie Lyles. "They never gave up and it showed on the scoreboard at the end of game. Every player on the roster was a big part of the win today. We have some things to adjust before next week, but for now we will enjoy the win and get back to making our team better on Monday."

After a slow first half, with the Owls trailing ASC by a 1-0 score, The W held Agnes Scott at bay the final 45 minutes. MUW netted three unanswered goals in the second half and out-shot the Scotties, 17-3. Overall, The W held a 23-4 cushion in shot attempts for the match.

ASC tallied its lone goal in the ninth minute, holding the 1-0 advantage until the intermission.

In the 61st minute, senior midfielder Hannah Helms (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) evened the match 1-1, with Adriana Parsons (Springdale, Ark./Springdale HS) assisting. That score stood until the 76th minute.

Owls' newcomer Millie Mask, playing her first match with The W, drove the ball inside the far post to make it 2-1 and provide the eventual match-deciding goal. Aubrey Baughman (Pass Christian, Miss./Pass Christian HS) earned the assist.

MUW added some insurance in the 79th minute when Helms notched her second goal of the contest. Fifth-year senior Sarah Havens (Hurley, Miss./East Central HS/Pearl River CC) was credited with the assist.

Meanwhile, The W goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss./New Rankin HS/East Central CC) allowed just the one goal in 90 minutes in the net. Gilliland registered three saves to preserve The W's first win of the young 2021 campaign.

The Owls will travel to Sewanee next Wednesday (Sept. 15), with a 5 p.m. kickoff in Sewanee, Tenn.
