COLUMBUS, Miss. – An offensive explosion propelled the Mississippi University for Women to a 10-0 women's soccer win over Oakwood University at the Columbus Sports Complex. The win by the Owls (2-1) over the Ambassadors (0-3) was the most goals scored by The W since October 12, 2019 (when the team pasted Welch College, 14-0).
MUW's relentless attack resulted in the Owls out-shooting the Ambassadors by a 23-0 margin. That left the trio of The W goalkeepers – starter
Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss.),
Caitlyn Fox (Saraland, Ala.) and
Megan Brown (Picayune, Miss.) - who saw action in the match, feeling akin to the old Maytag repairman commercials: the loneliest people in town. Oakwood not only failed to get off a shot, but a suffocating MUW defense kept the ball in the attacking half of the pitch most of the contest.
The W not only had a cornucopia of shots, but did so with efficiency. 16 of the Owls' attempts – nearly 70 percent – were directly on-frame.
"Today was a good win for us," The W Head Coach
Catie Lyles said. "All of our healthy players saw game time today. We had several different players score in the game. All of the girls kept positive attitudes and cheered each other on. We have two big games coming up this week and will begin work in the morning to prepare ourselves to be the best we can."
In the meantime, The W can relish its big win. The team led by the old, senior
Leah Anderson (Leyland, UK), and the new, freshman
Aubrey Baughman (Pass Christian, Miss.), who each netted a pair of goals. Baughman also dished off two assists, good for six game points. All three of Anderson's shots, as well as both by Baughman, were on-goal.
In all, seven Owls found the back of the net versus the Ambassadors. In addition to Anderson and Baughman, The W goals came from Marian Beckom (Columbus, Miss.),
Elizabeth Holland (Fair Grove, Mo.),
Haven Tuggle (Columbus, Miss.),
Adrianna Parsons (Springdale, Ark.) and
Millie Mask.
Mask had an assist, as did teammates
Hannah Helms (Southaven, Miss.),
Layla Wilson (D'Iberville, Miss.) and
Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.).
