Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer topped by Huntingdon, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women women's soccer team had its two-match win streak snapped, losing a home bout to Huntingdon College, 3-0, at the Columbus Soccer Complex. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-2 on the year, while the Hawks improved to 4-2 overall.

"Tonight was a tough loss for us," Head Coach Catie Lyles said. "The girls moved the ball and created chances; we just couldn't finish. I was very pleased with how they played. Things are starting to come together and their hard work is showing. We just need to stay positive and continue pushing and the end result will be rewarding. I was also very happy we had a few players step up and fill positions they don't normally play in. They just jumped in and did everything they could."

After a goal in the sixth minute, The W and Huntingdon were scoreless the balance of the first half. The Hawks had a 6-2 advantage in first-half shot attempts (14-3 for the match), but MUW had its chances with three corner kicks in the opening segment alone.

HC added scores in the 50th and 58th minutes. The Owls kept the Hawks at bay the rest of the way, but could not chip into the visitor's lead.

Then W senior goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss.) had four saves in the contest, three coming in the second half of play.

Senior midfielder Hannah Helms (Southaven, Miss.) had two of the Owls' three shot attempts. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Moyle (Pearl River, La.) had the other, putting her try on-goal and resulting in the only save for the Hawks' Paige Rhody.

The W returns to action on Sunday, (Sept. 26) at Rhodes College. Kickoff in Memphis, Tenn., is slated for 1 p.m.
