COLUMBUS, Miss. – A furious second-half comeback bid by The W Men's Soccer team fell short on Wednesday in a 3-1 setback versus Huntingdon College at the Columbus Soccer Complex. The Owls saw their record even out at 3-3, while the Hawks improved to 4-4 in 2021.
Huntingdon put in all three of its goals in the first half. The Hawks' tallies came in the 8th, 23rd and 37th minutes, jumping out to the 3-0 advantage on the scoreboard by the intermission. But that seemed to awaken MUW in the final 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Owls seemed to do a 180-degree turn. After a first half of being out-shot 6-4, MUW doubled up the attack attempts in the second half by a 10-5 count on the Hawks' defensive half. The W put five of those tries directly on-goal, with four saved by HC net-minder Joshua Burton.
However, in the 55th minute, the Owls freshman phenom
Vini Lopes netted what would be his team's lone goal of the match that made it 3-1.
The goal was the ninth of the season for Lopes in just six matches, thus far.
Overall, the Owls out-shot then Hawks, 14-11, in the match. Six shots by The W were on-goal, overall.
The W men will next host Rhodes College on Sunday (Sept. 26). Kickoff at the Columbus Soccer Complex is at 2 p.m.
