COLUMBUS, Miss. – The women's soccer squad from the Mississippi University for Women lost a home match to Birmingham-Southern College, 6-1, at the Columbus Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening. The setback dropped the Owls to 2-4 on the season, with the Panthers improving to 3-5-2 overall.
The W allowed a pair of first half goals to BSC, trailing 2-0 at the intermission. The Panthers then exploded for four tallies in the final segment.
The Owls took six total shots, four coming from their bench.
Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.) had two shots – both on-goal – and netted The W's only score of the match in the 73rd minute of play.
Leah Crabtree (Ocean Springs, Miss.) assisted on Harrington's score.
Seniors
Sarah Havens (Hurley, Miss.) and
Mariah Beckom (Columbus, Miss.) each had a shot off the bench, as well. Starters
Lindsey Moyle (Pearl River, La.) and
Hannah Helms (Southaven, Miss.) had MUW's other two shot attempts.
The W goalkeeper
Sarah Gilliland (Brandon, Miss.) faced 12 shots on-frame by the Panthers (who took 19 total attempts). Gilliland registered six saves playing all 90 minutes in the nets.
The Owls will next travel to Oakwood University on Friday (Oct. 1). Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
