Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Owls’ charge held off by PCC, 60-48

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Mississippi University for Women - and its depleted women's basketball roster – gave another gutsy effort, pushing No. 2-ranked Pensacola Christian College in a 60-48 setback at PCC. The resilient Owls never gave in versus the highly-ranked Lady Eagles, who improved to 14-2, despite facing a double-digit deficit most of the game.

The contest resembled a baseball game score in the early going.  The W trailed 5-2 with 4:24 remaining in the first period, after Audrey Foreman gave the Owls their first points of the game on a layup.

However, the host PCC squad would finish the period on a 13-1 run to lead 18-3 and, eventually, took a 33-13 advantage into the halftime locker room. That margin ballooned to 24 points – 41-17 – with 6:36 left in the third quarter and The W still trailed by 20 (62-42) entering the final period.

That's when Owls' Head Coach Drew Johnson's hearty band of players – just seven strong due to various reasons – began an assault on its deficit to PCC. With 2:27 left to play, The W had it down to a 10-point difference, 56-46, after a three-ball from MG Chamberlain.

But 37 minutes of doing battle versus the second-ranked team in the National Christian College Athletic Association took its toll, as the Owls ran out of gas and could get no closer down the stretch.

Chamberlain and Jasmine Shaw both finished the contest with double-doubles. Chamberlain led The W scoring for the second-consecutive game with 13 points. Chamberlain corralled 12 rebounds, 10 on the defensive glass. She also dished off three assists.

Shaw matched Chamberlain's 13 points, bolstering her totals by going 9-for-10 from the free throw stripe. Shaw's rebound tally was at 10, eight of the defensive variety. Her balanced effort included a game-leading four assists, along with two blocks and a steal.

Maddie Guerin booked 12 points and seven rebounds, hitting 5-of-7 field goal tries. She also had two blocked shots on her ledger. Cassidy Murphy added four points, while Foreman, Hannah Duran and Emma Hicks each had two points to round out the Owls' scoring.

Duran had four steals for The W.
