COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women and Talladega College found themselves scoreless for the first 80 minutes of their men's soccer bout, before the host MUW side tallied the lone goal of the match, 1-0, at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex. The win was the second-consecutive victory for the Owls (3-6-2).
With offense at a premium – The W had three shots-on-goal to one by the Tornadoes – MUW found the match-winning goal from an unlikely source: its pair of all-American defenders
Jacob Vickers and
Terrell Johnson.
After the tandem helped keep the Tornadic activity – offensively - to a minimum, they then provided The W with all of the scoring it would need at the 80:34-minute mark of the match. Vickers drove the ball past TC goalie Leonard Richardson after the nifty pass from Johnson.
The Owls held a slim 7-6 margin in total shot attempts for the evening.
Miguel Hernandez and
Pedro Santana each had two shot attempts for the Owls.
In the nets, The W's
David McCutchen made a save on the only shot-on-goal he faced. Richardson had a pair of stops for the Tornadoes.
"We focused on possession since our last game," MUW Head Coach
BJ Pheasant explained. "At the half, I told the team we got about 60 percent of where we need to be. They improved their play in the second half and came away with a deserved victory and a shutout. Now we need to sustain that play and positivity going forward."
The W will look to extend its win skein to three on Thursday (Oct. 13) when it travels to Toccoa Falls College in Georgia. Start time is slated for 3 p.m. Central Time.
