COLUMBUS, Miss. - A second-half surge propelled the Mississippi University for Women women's soccer team to an 8-0 victory over Talladega College at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex. The Owls' blowout win over the Tornadoes improved their season record to 5-4-1.
"Today was another great win at home," MUW Head coach
Catie Lyles said. "We finally started to finish in the second half and then the goals just came together. I'm very proud of the team for staying in the game and finishing it out.
"We have two big games coming up this week that we will need to get ready for now."
After losing four-consecutive matches over the previous three weeks, The W appears to have found its footing again this week. The Owls have won two straight and have outscored their two opponents 17-1 in the process.
But things started slowly for MUW versus the Tornadoes. TC actually got the first shot on-goal of the day, which was stopped by goalkeeper
Olivia Clark. Little did Clark know that it would be the only work she would need to do all game (Talladega's other shot in the second half was off frame).
MUW got its lone goal of the first stanza from Brendashia Garrett at the 20:03 minute mark.
Allyson Goza assisted on Garrett's tally, that stood until the intermission.
However, in the second segment, the Owl attackers peppered Talladega net-minder Monet Brown like a bland steak. 20 of MUW's 31 shots came in that second half. In all, the Owls had 18 shots-on-goal.
Seven different Owls found the back of the net. Senior All-American
Shelby Harrington led the assault with two goals. Harrington took five shots, with three on-goal.
In addition to Garrett's first half goal, Goza,
Lindsey Moyle,
Adrianna Parsons,
Loren Winters,
Lizzie Truelock and
Sydney Shoemaker all scored in MUW's big second half run. Truelock had two assists, as well.
Garrett had a game-leading six shot attempts, with five on-goal.
Molly Moore had four tries for the Owls.
