BREVARD, N.C. - Despite allowing just a single first-half goal, the Mississippi University for Women went down to defeat on the road at Brevard College, 1-0, at Ives-Lemel Family Field. The loss halted the Owls' win streak at two and left them with a 5-5-1 record, while the Tornados improved to 7-3-4 (snapping their string of four-straight ties).
The W and Brevard gave a fairly even accounting of themselves. The Tornados had a 10-8 advantage in total shot attempts and a 6-5 margin in shots-on-goal. The lone goal of the contest by BC came at the 31:29-minute mark when Emma White launched a 45-yard attempt on a free kick that careened off MUW goalkeeper
Olivia Clark's fingertips and found the back of the net.
Clark – and her Brevard counterpart Nicole Arroyo – each registered five saves for the evening.
With The W playing without leading scorer
Adrianna Parsons – lost for the season last Monday after sustaining a leg injury –
Molly Moore paced the MUW attack with three shots, two on frame.
Lizzie Truelock and
Shelby Harrington each had a pair of tries, with each also placing a shot on-goal.
The W women will stay in North Carolina for a Saturday match-up in Asheville versus Warren Wilson College, for an Owls-versus-Owls bout, to cap the road trip.
"Tonight was a tough loss versus a good team," MUW Head Coach
Catie Lyles said. "We played well tonight, but just came up short. We will take a rest day tomorrow and come back ready to play on Saturday (at Warren Wilson)."
