COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women volleyball ran into a hot Huntingdon College squad, suffering a 3-0 loss at Pohl Gym. The Owls saw their record dip to 7-13 overall, while the Hawks improved to 21-7, by set scores of 25-18, 25-21, 25-12.
In the first two sets of the contest, MUW battled strong. Set No. 1 saw The W holding an 11-6 lead. However, HC would embark on an 11-0 run to pull ahead 17-11, before closing out the match.
In the second set, the Owls burst out of the gate to lead, 7-1. The Hawks eventually caught up to The W at 13-13. The set was still tied at 21-21, when Huntingdon posted four-unanswered points for the win.
The final set was all HC, surging out 8-0 and not looking back to close out the set and match.
A trio of MUW players –
Jasmine Kelly,
Micaela Hudgins and
Maggie Griggs – each registered five kills to lead the Owls. Kelly had a blistering .833 attack average to top either team.
Huntingdon's Reece Rhodes led all attackers with 10 kills.
Kelly and Griggs each had a pair of blocks to lead The W at the net.
Libero
Maddy Suggs' 16 digs topped the back row players.
Hannah Duran added 11 digs and
Llayne Skinner had 10.
Camryn Johnson had seven assists, with
Karmen McCrory booking five "helps," as well.
The W will next be in action on Friday (Oct. 21) at Bethel University (Tenn.).
