COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women men's soccer tallied three first-half goals and made it stand up, in a 3-0 shutout over Southwestern Adventist University at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex. The Owls (5-7-3) blanking of the Knights (1-8-1) was the team's third shutout of the season.
"It was a tremendous effort by the few healthy players we had available today," The W Head Coach
BJ Pheasant said of his depleted lineup. "We were focused and moved the ball as a team."
The outing was, arguably, the Owls' most dominating of the season. MUW out-shot SAU by a 24-2 margin, including 13-0 in the opening segment, as the hosts took control. The W goalkeeper
David McCutchen – and his defense led by players like
Jacob Vickers,
Hagan Roberts, and
Brandon King – did not permit a shot on-frame to SAU.
Conversely, The W attack had seven shots-on-goal.
In the 22nd minute, the Owls opened the scoring when
Joseph Cumberland netted the ball, with the assist going to
Alejandro Pocasangre. It was Cumberland's second tally of the season.
In the 31st minute, senior all-American defender Vickers took a nice delivery from
Pedro Santana and notched the second goal of his MUW career to up the Owls' lead to 2-0.
Santana, in the 39th minute, posted The W's third goal of the afternoon – and his third of the season – to make it the final 3-0 score.
Tres Ray and
Alfredo Marin assisted on Santana's goal.
The W will host Piedmont University on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 2 p.m. The Owls will honor their seniors in pre-game ceremonies that day, as well.
