Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Owls, Truelock have a big day versus Knights, 9-0

COLUMBUS, Miss. -  Senior midfielder – and Caledonia native - Lizzie Truelock scored a school match record four goals, to lead the Mississippi University for Women women's soccer team to a dominating, 9-0, win over Southwestern Adventist University at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex. The win upped the Owls' record to 7-5-1 on the year, while the Knights fell to 4-6-1.

The W team honored Truelock, the squad's only fourth-year player, and seven Owls' players in their final season at MUW, in post-game Senior Day ceremonies. Also recognized were: Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg, Miss.); Millie Mask (Nettleton, Miss.); Brendaisha Garrett (Gautier, Miss.); Becca Gregory (Laurel, Miss.); Mariah Beckom (Columbus, Miss.); Layla Wilson (D'Iberville, Miss.), and; Shedaria Fairley (Lucedale, Miss.).

"It was a huge win on Senior Day," The W Head Coach Catie Lyles said. "What a great way for our seniors to remember their Senior Day at The W.

"The first half was a little rocky but, again, the girls got it together and started playing more our style in the second half and finished out the game."

But even a "rocky" half – by The W standards – wasn't too bad, as it won for the fourth time in its last six matches. The Owls out-shot SAU by a 15-1 margin in the first half and then 14-0 in the second, for a 29-1 advantage overall. The Knights' lone shot attempt came in the 16th minute and, after that, it was akin to "Camp M.U.W." in the Southwestern Adventist defensive half.

Thanks to the efforts of the MUW defensive platoons – Loren Winters, Beckom, Seline Decoteau, Millie Mask, Gregory, Haley Kelly, Katie Mills, and Sage Cruse -  incursions by the Knights into The W territory were about as infrequent as a total eclipse of the sun. Leading 3-0 at the intermission, continually fighting the battle in the SAU half eventually saw the proverbial dam burst and the Owls netting a six-goal spree second half.

Truelock's four goals against SAU net-minder Lexie Key not only unlocked a match record for goals, but for total points, as well, with eight. She also tallied with great efficiency, going 4-for-4 in shots/on-goal for the morning.

Junior midfielder Lindsey Moyle had a nice match, especially in the first half, as she put in two of the team's three first-half goals. Goals by Moyle in the 28th and 44th minutes – sandwiching a tally by Allyson Goza in the 37th minute – put The W ahead for good.

Truelock's four-goal barrage all occurred in the second half, in the 69th, 73rd, 80th, and 82nd minutes. Molly Moore's third goal of the season in the 70th minute and Sage Cruse's first score as an Owl in the 89th, capped the goals for MUW.

Sydney Shoemaker and Goza had three and two assists, respectively. Moore, Kelly, and Garrett had the Owls' other three "helps" in the match.

The W will next host Tougaloo College on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at 6 p.m. at the LCSC.
