COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women Volleyball set a modern-era record by notching its seventh win of the season, defeating Tougaloo College, 3-1, at Pohl Gym. The Owls (7-9) will have at least nine more matches to better their mark, since the sport was reinstated in 2017.
The victory over the Bulldogs (1-12) was also The W's first contest in a week. MUW snapped a five-match skid versus what was no doubt its toughest stretch of the season – all within an eight-day span – including a pair of bouts versus NCAA Division II teams.
Defensively, MUW held a 7-4 advantage in blocks and limited TC to a .007 attack average for the night. Conversely, the Owls hit .215 and led in total kills, 51-33.
Micaela Hudgins and
Llayne Skinner led the Owls offense, each garnering double-figure kill totals. Hudgins had 11 kills and a team-leading .455 attack average in her 22 attempts. Hudgins also led MUW with five block assists.
Skinner knocked down 10 kills in 36 attempts, booking nine digs, as well.
Maggie Griggs chipped in nine kills and
Amonie Silas seven. Silas had three blocks – one solo and two assisted – for her team.
The W's setter tandem of
Hannah Duran and
Camryn Johnson combined for 33 assists. Duran registers 18 "helps" and Johnson 15.
Junior libero
Maddy Suggs led the back row with 21 digs.
Sydney Horel had 13 digs and Duran 12.
Suggs, Johnson and Griggs each had one service ace to their credit.
MUW will look to improve upon its record Wednesday evening (Oct. 5) when it travels to Memphis to take on Rhodes College. Start time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
