COLUMBUS, Miss. – The good news for the Mississippi University for Women was that it scored 23 points above its season average against Birmingham-Southern College. The bad news for the Owls was that they were up against the top scoring team in nation for NCAA Division III women's basketball, as the Panthers took a 150-76 victory at Pohl Gym.
The foot-to-the-pedal offense of B-SC, combined with The W's short roster and 46 Owl turnovers made for a long night for the host MUW squad. Five of the Owls' seven players scored in the game, while B-SC ran three 'platoons' at MUW that saw 14 of the 15 players score (seven in double digits)
The win by the Panther also gave them the season sweep versus The W.
The W's talented trio of
Conley Langford,
MG Chamberlain and
Jas Patrick also accomplished something not previously done in the five seasons of the modern era of MUW women's basketball. All three players reached 20 or more points in the game, the first time that has happened in a single contest since the program was restarted in 2018.
Langford had a double-double with game-leading totals with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Langford connected on 10-of-15 from the floor and went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. She had two assists and made two steals, as well.
Chamberlain was 10-of-18 from the field, on her way to 21 points. Chamberlain grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots.
Patrick finished the game with 20 points, buoyed by an 8-for-10 game from the free throw line. Patrick also had two assists and two steals.
Reagan Sonnier and
Becca Owens chipped in six and four points, respectively, to round out MUW's offense.
The W will close out its calendar 2022 slate of game on Thursday (Dec. 15/3 p.m.) by hosting Millsaps College.
