JACKSON, Miss. - The 2022 season opener did not go as the Mississippi University for Women baseball team would have liked, as it lost a 15-1 decision versus Rhodes College, which received votes in the NCAA III top-25 poll.
Playing in the Millsaps Baseball Classic, the Owls were knotted with the Lynx, 1-1, after 2 ½ innings. But that's when the flood gates opened and Rhodes tallied three runs each in the third, fourth and fifth frames, before adding a five-spot in the sixth.
The W leadoff hitter, and leftfielder,
Blaize Gann collected three of his team's five total hits. Gann was 3-for-4 and also scored MUW's lone run of the afternoon.
Joel Estabrook – batting in the No. 2 spot – and designated hitter Dean Bevell each went 1-for-2 to account for the Owls' other two hits.
Kirby Ross went 2.0 innings and took the loss for The W. Ross allowed five hits and four earned runs. He stuck out three and walked three.
Brandon Fenimore had three "K's" in 2.2 innings of work.
The Owls will next face Centenary College in Jackson at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
