Box Score 2 LAUREL, Miss.- Mississippi University for Women's softball team may have given its head coach
Buddy Foster some heartburn on both ends of its doubleheader sweep over Southeastern Baptist University. But, in the end, a pair of late rallies produced wins of 9-1 and 8-1 by the Owls over the Chargers.
With the victories, The W improved to 5-1 on the young 2022 season. But it was not without huge final at-bats in both in near-identical scenarios in both wins.
"Pitching and defense were good," Foster said "Both (
Kaitlyn Parrish and
Amelia Stalter) did a great job setting the tone in the circle. Offensively, we were pressing and impatient. We have to do a better job of making adjustments. We will take the wins and get back to work."
In game one, the Owls nursed a 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh frame. That's when the visitor's bats came to life, pounding out seven of the teams 12 hits in their final swings. MUW would tally seven runs – sending 11 batters to the plate – to blow open the game.
Parrish, a senior, notched her first win this season, going the complete 7.0 innings. Parrish scattered five hits, walked one and struck out two. She allowed just one unearned run.
Senior
Madison Crosby led the offense by going 3-for-4. All three hits by the Oxford, Miss., native were doubles.
Outfielder
Megan Cummins was 2-for-4, with a double. The senior stole three bases, as well.
Fellow senior
Jessica Deming (1-4) laced a double, as well, driving in one.
In the nightcap, the Owls trailed 1-0 for most of the contest, tying matters with an unearned run in the top of the 6th. That score stood through the seventh, sending the game into an extra frame.
Much as in game one, The W erupted in the top of the eighth. 11 Owls came to the plate and produced six hits (of the team's 11 for the game), plating seven runs to once again deflate an SBC hopes.
The tandem of
Kaylee Quimby and
Anna Sandlin each collected three hits. Sandlin went 3-for-4, while Quimby was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Deming was 2-for-5 in the second game, with a double and two runs batted in from her leadoff spot. Teammate
Katelyn Hicks came off the bench to go 1-for-2, delivering a home run in the eighth, while stealing a pair of bases.
Stalter gave a strong 8.0 innings for the Owls, improving her personal record to 3-0. Stalter permitted just three hits to the Chargers, while striking out seven, walking four and allowing a single earned run in the complete-game win.
The W will next be in action on Feb. 26-27 when its hosts its Owls Invitational at Don Usher Field.
