MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi University for Women pitching woes once again reared its ugly head versus host Huntingdon College in the finale of the Firehouse Classic. The Owls (0-6) came out on the short end of a 20-5 tally against the Hawks (4-2), in a run-rule shortened game.
The W had high hopes early on, when leadoff man
Blaize Gann opened the game with a triple to right. Gann eventually scored on a ground out by
Joel Estabrook. In the top of the second,
Tanner Evans came home on an unearned run that made it 2-0 in favor of the Owls.
But that's where The W's day went south. In the home half of the third, the Hawks plated six runs to wrest the lead from the Owls, 6-2.
MUW got two runs back in the top of the third. An RBI single by Evans drove in Gann. That was followed by a single by
Austin Telano that brought in
Blake Estabrook, getting the Owls to within a pair, 6-4.
Unfortunately for The W, in the third inning HC replicated its second inning fireworks with another six-run frame, 12-4. The Hawks rolled an "8" in the bottom of the fifth to lead 20-4.
MUW added a run to its coffers in the seventh. Gann hit a slow roller to the left side that allowed
Landon Clark to trot home from third for the 20-5 final score.
Gann was the lone Owl player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4, with the triple. He scored twice and had a run batted in.
Evans was 1-for-2 and had a pair of walks. He scored once and drove in a run.
Telano was 1-of-2 at the plate, driving in one and walking once, as well.
The W starter
Payton Springfield went 2.1 innings and was charged with 11 runs, only seven of which were earned. He permitted nine Hawks' hits, striking out four and walking three.
Relievers
Zay Coleman (1 ER/0.0 IP) and
Joel Estabrook (8 runs/6 earned/1.2 IP) did not fare well versus the Huntingdon bats, either. Only Evans – who threw a scoreless 2.0 innings as the Owls' fourth hurler – was unscathed. In all, Huntingdon amassed 17 hits.
The W will look to regroup Feb. 25-27 when it travels to Jackson for the Millsaps Tournament. The W will face Eureka College (Ill.) on Friday, Edgewood College (Wis.) on Saturday and host Millsaps on Sunday.
