Owls Baseball posts first win of Mularz era; tops Eureka, 7-3

JACKSON, Miss. -  The translation of the word "Eureka" comes from the Ancient Greek and means: "I have found it." The Mississippi University for Women baseball team did just that, finding its first win of the young 2022 season – and first under new head coach Scott Mularz – with its 7-3 win over Eureka College at Twenty Field in the Millsaps Tournament.

The Owls not only got the "W", but did so with clutch play and late-inning offense.

The Red Devils built a 3-0 lead early over the Owls, which they carried into the seventh inning. The W found itself hitless for the first five frames, before mustering a pair of singles from Bret Linton and Baker Watson in the top of the sixth (both of whom were left on base).

However, in the Owls seventh, the team managed to knot the contest at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Avery Benson slapped a single through the left side that drove in Joel Estabrook. Bret Linton then lifted a sacrifice fly foul out to right that allowed Blake Estabrook to trot home. After a Devils' pitching change, CJ Wise laid down a sacrifice squeeze, with Austin Telano crossing the plate to make it 3-3.

That score stood until the top of nine, when The W took the commanding lead. Blake Estabrook led off with a single through the left side and Telano reached on a fielder's choice error by the shortstop. Benson followed with a single that drove home Estabrook with what would prove to be the game-winning RBI, 4-3.

The W added insurance when Linton lined a double to left that knocked in Telano, with Benson stopping at third, 5-3. The Owls added two more back-to-back runs on a wild pitch and passed ball for the 7-3 final score.

The middle portion of MUW's lineup collected six of the team's eight hits. Blake Estabrook, Benson and Linton each went 2-for-4 batting for the afternoon, hitting in the Nos. 4, 6, & 7 slots, respectively. Estabrook scored twice, while Benson and Linton each drove in a pair of runs.

Both Owls' hurlers in the game put up strong efforts. Starter Avery Anderson went 6.0 and scattered seven hits, giving up three runs (two earned) in getting no decision. Anderson, a sophomore right-hander from Hoover, Ala., struck out five and walked just one.

Reliever Tyler Temple – a junior righty - probably looked more like the "Temple of Doom" to the Eureka batters. Temple (1-1) tossed 3.0 hitless and scoreless innings to get the win. He registered four "K's" with just one walk, facing just one batter over the minimum.

"The guys executed and fought hard all day," Mularz said. "We started slow at the plate, but the guys kept battling and we found a way to win. Avery Anderson and Tyler temple did a great job on the mound all day.  They throw a ton of strikes and we played clean defense behind them."

The W will look to make it two in a row on Saturday at 12 p.m. when it faces Edgewood College (Wis.) on Day Two of the Millsaps tourney.
