JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women's baseball team was limited to three hits, as it lost a 4-2 decision at Millsaps College's Twenty Field. The Owls (5-9) loss evened the series versus the Majors (12-5) at 1-1, with The W earning an 11-8 win back on Feb. 27.
It was also the Owls' seventh game – of their 14 thus far in 2022 - played in the city of Jackson.
Both teams received good pitching, for the most part, in a contest where nine total hurlers - five by MUW and four by the Majors – were employed for the non-league bout. The W's
Kirby Ross and
Brandon Fenimore each threw 2.0 innings, allowing no earned runs (two unearned runs were charged to Fenimore).
Zay Coleman worked a scoreless fifth. But in the sixth, Coleman allowed a leadoff single, with the runner advancing to second on his throwing error. After inducing a ground out, Coleman was lifted and
Tyler Temple took the hill. Temple's first batter, MC leadoff man Chris Hart, then slammed a home run to left that made it the final 4-2 margin.
Temple finished off the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh.
Tanner Evans had a clean eighth frame to keep the Owls within striking distance.
Unfortunately for The W, a case of cold bats kept Millsaps' lead safe. MUW's offense consisted of an unearned run in the third and a run in the top of the sixth. With one out in that sixth,
Austin Telano walked, went to second on Evans' (1-4) double and came home on
Joel Estabrook's (1-3) sacrifice fly to center.
Landon Clark had the Owls' other hit in the game.
