MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi University for Women's baseball team came out on the short end of both games of a doubleheader at Huntingdon College on Sunday. The Owls (5-10) were defeated by the Hawks (7-7) in game one, 11-2, before losing the nightcap, 9-6.
In the first bout of the twinbill, HC would score all it needed in the second inning of the seven inning contest, putting up a five spot on The W. The Hawks added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames, before adding three in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Owls got a run in the top of the third, thanks to an RBI single from
Blake Estabrook (1-3) that allowed
Tanner Evans to score. Evans also tallied The W's other run in the seventh, this time courtesy of an RBI base knock from
Joel Estabrook.
Evans and
Joel Estabrook each had a pair of hits for the Owls.
Joel Estabrook (0-1) also took the loss on the mound. He went 4.0 innings, permitted five hits and was charged with seven runs (six earned).
In game two, The W found itself down 4-2 after five innings. Catcher
Avery Benson one-out single to right drove in
Blake Estabrook. Two batters later,
Ryan Smith's ground out to short allowed Benson to come home with th4e tying run, 4-4.
In the eighth, an unearned run gave The W a lead for the first time since the first inning. With one out,
Joel Estabrook laid down a bunt attempt and a three-base throwing error by the Hawks' catcher put him at third. He would score on a grounder to short by
Blake Estabrook that made it 5-4.
After Huntingdon pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to go ahead, 6-5, a Benson bomb over the right-field fence got the Owls even once again, 6-6.
But in the home half of the eighth, the Hawks got to reliever
Tyler Temple for three runs. The W was unable to muster anything in its final at-bats in the 9-6 setback.
Benson finished the game a perfect 4-for-4, with two runs and two RBI.
Ethan Carrouth was 2-for-4, with a double.
