Owls’ Baseball splits with SBC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAUREL, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women baseball split its Friday doubleheader at Southeastern Baptist College. The Owls (10-18) lost the first game in walk-off fashion, 5-4, but bounced back to crush the Chargers, 13-7, in the nightcap.

The W won the season series versus SBC, three game to one.

In game one, MUW tallied first in the opening at-bats. Landon Clark drew a one-out walk and went to third on Avery Benson's single. Clark came home on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Evans. The Chargers made it 1-1 in their half of the first.

The Owls plated a pair of runs in the third thanks to RBI singles from Ethan Carrouth and Austin Telano. But a two-run homer by SBC in the fourth off starter Kirby Ross leveled the score at 3-3.

The W retook the lead, 4-3, when Carrouth came home on a balk in the fifth. MUW kept that advantage heading to the final turn at the plate by the Chargers in the seventh. Unfortunately, for the Owls, SBC would tally twice in its final swings and sent The W down to a 5-4 defeat.

Carrouth finished the game 2-for-3, with a run, and RBI and a walk. Telano was also 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a walk.

Benson and Blake Estabrook each went 2-for-4.

Ross went 6.0 innings and permitted six hits. Four of the five runs allowed were earned. He struck out four Chargers. Payton Springfield pitched the seventh and took the loss.

In game two, The W had its best offensive production in a game by crossing the plate 13 times, its fifth game of 2022 with double-digit runs. The Owls broke things open early, with five runs each in the second and third innings to build a 10-0 cushion.

Leadoff batter Thomas Tucker went 4-for-5 to lead The W. Blaize Gann was 2-for-2, with a pair of sacrifice flies. Gann had two RBI and two runs scored.

Baker Watson and Joel Estabrook each had 2-for-2 games at the plate and each also scored twice. Estabrook walked twice and Watson drove in four runners.

Evans went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
