Owls’ big comeback bid falls short in twinbill loss to Belhaven

CLINTON, Miss. -  It was a day of battling back for the Mississippi University for Women baseball team, as it lost a doubleheader to Belhaven University, played a Frierson Field. The Owls (9-17) dropped the opener, 7-3, before succumbing in game two, 10-8.

In the seven-inning game one, The W found itself trailing 6-1 after four innings. In the top of the fifth, MUW plated two runs. Landon Clark lead off with a double down the leftfield line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A ground out by Tanner Evans got Clark home. Blake Estabrook then singled and trotted home on a Blaize Gann triple that cut the margin to 6-3.

In the sixth, The W's Bret Linton led off with a single and Baker Watson reached on a Blazers' fielding error, bringing the tying run to the plate three times. But all three Owls' batters failed to slice into Belhaven's lead.

BU added a run in the sixth for the 7-3 final score.

Linton had two of his team's eight hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

In the second game, MUW was on the precipice of being run-ruled, down 10-0 through five frames. But then came the sixth for The W.

The Owls would send 11 men to the plate and score seven runs. MUW had four hits, two walks, a hit batter and took advantage of two Blazer errors in making it 10-7. An unearned run in the Owls' eighth cut the margin to 10-8.

But that was as close as The W would get, as it was unable to add any more runs to its coffers.

The W was able to creep back into the game by shutting down the Belhaven bats down the stretch, thanks in great part to Clark's efforts on the mound. The freshman from Tuscaloosa 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and allowed just two hits.

Clark went 2-for-3 at the plate. He scored once, drove in one run and drew a walk.

Blake Estabrook and Avery Benson had identical lines, each going 1-for-4 with two RBI, a run and a walk. Cole Adams had a 1-for-2 day off the bench, with a two-run triple.
