Owls Volleyball splits home doubleheader with PCC

COLUMBUS, Miss. – In its 2022 home opener, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team split a pair of matches versus Pensacola Christian College. The Owls (1-2) won the first match-up, 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17), before dropping the second bout, 0-3 (18-25, 12-25, 16-25).
 
In match one, The W outhit the Eagles by a .210 to .085 margin. That attack was led by the duo of Jasmine Kelly and Maggie Griggs. Kelly converted 10-of-15 kill attempts – with just one error – for a lofty .600 attack average for the match. She also had six aces and three solo blocks to her credit.
 
Griggs produced a team-high 11 kills and a .304 attack average. Griggs also served up a pair of aces.
 
In all, MUW amassed 16 aces. Layne Skinner matched Kelly with six winners. Skinner had a well-balanced effort, with six kills, 11 digs and a .910 reception percentage in 18 attempts.
 
Micaela Hudgins led the Owls up front on defense with six blocks, four of the solo variety. The W had 11 team blocks in the contest.
 
Libero Maddy Suggs had a team-best 26 digs. Karmen McCrory chipped in 19 assists and Camryn Johnson had 10 helps. McCrory and Johnson had eight and seven digs, respectively.
 
In match two of the day, The Eagles turned the tables by outhitting The W, .319 to .029 in the match. Hudgins topped the Owls with six kills, while also contributing two solo blocks.
 
Sophomore Hannah Duran led MUW with eight assists and eight digs. Abby Fields added five assists and Jadelyn Trice booked two aces in the loss.
 
The W will next be in action at Sewanee on Wednesday (Sept. 7/7 p.m.).
