MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mississippi University for Women women's basketball was unable to overcome its turnovers in suffering an 80-40 defeat at Huntingdon College. The Owls committed 22 miscues – 14 unforced - which were converted into 38 points by the Hawks.
The W led by three points early on. With 3:23 remaining in the first quarter, a
Jas Patrick layup knotted matters at 12-12. Little could the Owls' freshman phenom guard have known those would be the last points MUW would see for a while.
The W did not score the balance of the first stanza, as HC led 24-12 entering the second quarter. Huntingdon opened the second period on a 10-0 run, before The W finally got a basket on a layup by
Conley Langford at the 4:22 mark. That left a gap of better than nine minutes in the first half where MUW failed to score, as the Hawks led 44-19 at the intermission.
Langford and Patrick led the Owls in scoring, as well as each playing all 40 minutes. Langford narrowly missed a sixth-straight double-double game, finishing the afternoon with game-leading totals with 17 points and nine rebounds. Langford was 7-for-22 from the field, overall.
Patrick was an efficient 4-of-6 from the field on her way to a 12-point effort. Patrick also had a game-high four steals to her credit.
Reagan Sonnier and
Ashley Cooper added seven and four points, respectively, as the only other Owls to scorer. Each also pulled down four rebounds.
While guard
Hannah Duran was kept out of the scoring line, she did contribute to her team in virtually every other category. Duran had seven rebounds – all defensive – dished off for four assists and had a blocked shot on her ledger.
The W will next travel to Jackson, Miss., for a rematch with Belhaven University on Wednesday (Feb. 1) at 5:30 p.m.
