COLUMBUS, Miss. - Despite battling strong in each set, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team dropped a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) match to Lyon College, 3-0, on Tuesday evening. The Owls (4-11, 2-6 SLIAC) lost to the Scots (9-11, 5-2 SLIAC) by set scores of 29-27, 25-21, 25-19, at Pohl Gym.
The first set may have been the most gut-wrenching for the upstart MUW squad. The Owls had three set-point opportunities, leading 24-20, before eventually losing the elongated 29-27 score.
Senior libero – and former Caledonia High School standout –
Madison Suggs led all back-row players with 22 digs. Suggs also added three assists and made just one receiving error on the night. She also inched closer to the prestigious 1,000-dig plateau for her four-year MUW career, now sitting at 946 digs.
Allison Carpenter chipped in 15 digs and also produced three assists. Setters
Hannah Duran and
Camryn Johnson had 10 and seven assists, respectively, to lead The W. Johnson also chipped in two service aces.
On the offensive side,
Llayne Skinner's 11 kills paced the Owls. Skinner had a .229 attack average in a team-leading 35 attempts.
Amonie Silas hit for the best average, .286, with nine kills in 21 attempts, making three errors.
Maggie Griggs booked six kills.
The W will next host Huntingdon College on Thursday (Oct. 12/5 p.m.) in a non-conference bout at Pohl Gym.
