Box Score COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women solidified its current No. 4 position in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) standings by virtue of its 3-1 win versus the team directly behind them, Principia College, Wednesday evening at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The victory improved the Owls to 4-6-0, 3-3-0 in the SLIAC, while the fifth-place Panthers fell to 2-9-1 and 2-3-1 in the SLIAC.
The match was never really in jeopardy for The W, which out-shot Principia by a 12-4 margin and 7-2 for shots-on-goal. MUW led 2-0 at the half and had built a 3-0 cushion before the Panthers registered their goal in the 87th minute.
Junior midfielder
Carlie Giles continued her break-out season by scoring the Owls' first two goals of the night in the 11th and 34th minutes. The assists on Giles' tallies went to
Olivia Deslatte and
Kiersten Taylor, respectively.
Giles, a native of Brandon, Miss., who came to The W by way of Hinds Community College, now has a team-leading seven goals scored in 2023. She also has an impressive .792 shots on-goal average for the year, as well.
Senior all-American defender
Molly Moore scored her first goal of the season in the 78th minute to up MUW's cushion to 3-0. Deslatte assisted on Moore's goal for her second "help" of the match.
The W goalkeeping tandem of
Alex Moon and
Olivia Clark booked the team's third combined shutout of the season. Moon did not face any shots in the opening 45 minutes, while Clark had one save and the goal allowed in the second half.
The W women will next play host to regional rival Belhaven University, in a non-conference match, on Tuesday (Oct. 17/6 p.m. at the Roger Short Soccer Complex.
