Suggs reaches 1,000 digs plateau

COLUMBUS, Miss. – It was a record that's been nearly four years in the making, but Mississippi University for Women senior libero Madison Suggs (Caledonia, Miss.) finally reached the 1,000 digs mark for her career on Tuesday evening at home versus Rhodes College. Officially, Suggs recorded dig No. 1,000 early in the second set of the Owls (4-15) loss to the Lynx (7-13) by set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 at Pohl Gym.

Suggs entered the match already the possessor of every digs record in the Owls' record book for matches, season, and career marks. With nine regular season matches still to be played, Suggs will have ample opportunity to pad her career digs total of 1,005 after the Rhodes' contests. For her MUW career, Suggs is averaging nearly 4.4 digs per set over her 230 sets played.

Despite her back-row effort of nine total digs versus the Lynx, the Owls were unable to overcome a red-hot .295 team attack average by the visitors. RC doubled up on The W in total kills (48-24) and held a 5-2 margin in blocks, as well.

Junior Llayne Skinner had a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs in the setback. Skinner had a team-best .391 attack average in her 23 attempts (making just one error).

Maggie Griggs chipped in six kills and Madyson McBrayer added three.

Newcomer Jamya Fondren was a force at the net, with four blocks, three of the solo variety. Senior setter Karmen McCrory led MUW with nine assists and two aces on her ledger.

The W will return to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (Oct. 20/6:30 p.m.) at Greenville College in Illinois.
