COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women scored the fourth-most goals in a match in program history, on its way to a resounding 10-0 victory over Eureka College. The win was the second-consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) win for the Owls (3-4-0, 2-1-0 SLIAC) and also kept the Red Devils (0-7-0, 0-2-0 SLIAC) winless.
The W dominated EC in every aspect of the match. MUW peppered the Red Devils' with 35 total shot attempts, 27 directly on-goal (both season highs for the Owls). Conversely, so strong was The W defense that Eureka was unable to get off a single shot attempt and the Owls controlled the ball for the vast majority of the contest, not even permitting a corner kick to EC.
Sophomore
Kimi Norway (San Francisco, Calif.) came off of the Owls' bench and had a huge afternoon with her first collegiate "hat trick". Norway's tallies came in the 27th, 41st, and 85th minutes. She blasted a match-leading 10-shot attempts (a .300 shooting percentage), resulting in a high degree of accuracy, as well, with eight of her tries going directly on-frame (a .880 shots-on-goal average).
Norway was the only player with multiple goals, as seven of her teammates all joined the scoring carrousel. The septet included
Haley Kelley (Diamondhead, Miss.) in the 7',
Carlie Giles (Brandon, Miss.) in the 8',
Kiersten Taylor (Pearl River, Miss.) in the 12',
Mia Mauro (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) in the 14',
Gracie Francisco (Caledonia, Miss.) in the 43',
Seline Decoteau (Pascagoula, Miss.) in the 46', and
Alex Moon (Poynton with Worth, England) in the 71'.
For Norway, Kelley, Francisco, Decoteau, and Moon, it was their first goal(s) of 2023. It was the third goal of the season for both Taylor and Mauro, while Giles now has a team-leading five goals.
The W built up a 7-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
MUW's Moon played the first 45 minutes in the net before donning the field gear in the second half, as
Olivia Clark (Decatur, Miss.) was the net-minder in the second stanza of the combined shutout. All three of The W's wins have been by shutout, out-scoring the opponents by a combined 21-0 in those matches.
