COLUMBUS, Miss. – For a school record sixth time this season, the Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team played to a tie, this time in a non-conference matchup versus regional-rival Millsaps College, 1-1, at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls (3-9-6) have heard the word "draw" so much in 2023, they may feel like they are in an old Western movie.
However, the standoff with the Majors (1-12-3) is the best result that The W has had in the four meetings of the series with Millsaps, having lost the previous three. It was the first time the teams had square off on the soccer pitch since 2019 (a 3-0 win by MC).
MUW clearly had the more aggressive contest, out-shooting Millsaps by an 18-10 count and 13-7 on-goal. But the two teams played to a scoreless first half and nearly 30 minutes of the second, before a score was recorded.
At the 74:32 juncture, the Owls'
Tres Ray brought the ball up the far side and then dribbled to center. Ray then slammed the ball inside the near post, past an out-stretched Michael Hamauei to make it 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
While The W defenders, and goalkeeper
David McCutchen, kept the Majors' threat minor the bulk of the night, Millsaps would eventually tally its goal on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to forge the 1-1 draw.
McCutchen finished the evening with five saves. His MC counterpart had 12 saves versus the MUW attackers.
The W will resume SLIAC action at home on Saturday, hosting Greenville University at 3 p.m.
