JACKSON, Miss. – For the second-consecutive match, Mississippi University for Women men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw, this time versus regional rival, and non-conference opponent, Belhaven University at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. The Owls, unbeaten in their last three matches, are now 2-6-3 overall, while the Blazers are 4-2-4 in 2023.
After giving up a goal to host BU in the 22nd minute, The W settled in to pitch a shutout the rest of the way. And it was a good thing that the MUW defense – behind goalkeeper
David McCutchen and defenders
Kai VanCourt,
Hagan Roberts and
Victor Gomez – had a bend-but-don't-break effort under the load of 26 shots and 13 corner kicks by the Blazers' attack.
The Owls, however, could not get their offense in gear for most of the contest, hoisting five total shots and three on-frame. Trailing 1-0 at the half, the lone score by The W came at the 71:26 juncture on a penalty kick goal by
Mo Diallo.
For Diallo, it was his team-leading fourth goal of the season and knotted matters for the 1-1 final score.
Diallo had two of MUW's shots, both going on-goal, as well. Gavi Gaudin also had a shot on-goal to his credit.
Joseph Cumberland and
Cristian Canas each had a try, as well.
McCutchen would finish the evening with five saves on his ledger.
