Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls women’s hoops loses a “track meet” at Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi University for Women women's basketball team came out on the short end of a high-scoring affair on the road, 121-86, in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) bout at Lyon College. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-4 overall (1-2 SLIAC), while the Scots improved to 5-3 (2-1 SLIAC).

The good news for The W was that the 86 point were the most it has scored in a game this season and since November 23, 2021 when it tallied 94 versus Birmingham-Southern. It was also the fourth-most points scored by an MUW squad in its modern era.

The bad news, however, was that that the 121 points allowed is the most The W has allowed this in a game this season, as well. Both teams scored well above their offensive averages of 80.1 points per game by Lyon and 65.2 p.p.g. for the Owls.

Translation: defense went out the window on Tuesday evening. The host Scots had a total of seven players finish in double-digit scoring.

The W squad was certainly no slouch itself, finishing with five players in double figures. Sophomore guard Jas Patrick led The W in both scoring, 13 point, and rebounds, with eight. She connected on 4-of-7 from the field.

Sophomore transfer Zoe Essary and freshman Aaliyah Moody each booked 12 points. Moody also pulled down for rebounds and hit 5-of-8 from the floor off the Owls' bench in the best game of her young college career.

Claire Leak and Conley Langford each booked 11 points to round out the quintet of double-figure scorers for MUW. Langford also chipped in four rebounds and three assists.

Miracle Joiner pulled down seven rebounds and Jessica Hughes grabbed five caroms, as The W had a 41-39 advantage on the glass.

The Owls will next be in action on Saturday (Dec. 16/1 p.m.) at Millsaps College for a non-conference match-up.
