COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women baseball received an outstanding effort from its pitching corps, leading to a doubleheader sweep over Greenville University at Heritage Field. The Owls (2-2) toppled the Panthers by scores of 8-1 and 2-1.
However, in its first at-bats at home for 2023, it was The W offense that gave starter
Robby Canten a sizeable cushion to work with. In their half of the first, MUW sent 10 men to the plate and produced six runs.
Tyler Estabrook (2-5) singled to leadoff, took second on a passed ball and came around to score on a pair of Panther errors on a pickoff attempt, 1-0.
That started the merry-go-round for The W. In the big inning,
Landon Clark (2-5) had a two-run single,
Jake Williams (1-4) a two-run double, and the sixth run on a fielding error at first.
The Owls added a run in the second on a bases-loaded walk to
Avery Benson (0-1, 4 walks), that would also chase GU starter Braden Maltbie.
In the meantime, Canten (1-0) was locked in himself. Canten went 6.0 innings and did not permit a hit until the third. He scattered three hits and permitted a single earned run, while striking out five Panthers.
Ethan LeBlanc and
Tyler Temple tossed 1.0 and 2.0 shutout innings, respectively. Each allowed just a single hit.
The W added a run in the eighth when right-fielder
Johnny Setchfield blistered a solo home run to left. It was his second round-tripper of the season.
Game two saw the Panthers' Luke Fleener and The W's
Campbell McCluney lock horns in a pitcher's duel, with neither figuring in the decision for their efforts. Fleener went 6.0 innings and gave up just one run in the fifth, after Benson (1-3) doubled to left and Carrouth (1-3) drove him home with a single inside the first-base line.
McCluney countered with 5.0 scoreless innings. He allowed six hits and struck out five, without issuing a walk.
Matt Swartz was the pitcher of record, after allowing the tying run to score, as well. Swartz gave up two hits in 2.0 innings and had two "Ks". He was also the benefactor when MUW plated a run on a ball four wild pitch to
Matthew Windham that allowed
Tanner Evans (1-3) to slide in from third to make it 2-1.
Brandon Fenimore threw two perfect innings of relief to earn his first save of 2023 and preserve the victory.
