Owls drop twinbill at Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. – Mississippi University for Women baseball came out on the short end of both halves of its doubleheader at Asbury University on Friday afternoon. The Owls (2-11) fell to the Eagles (8-10) by scores of 19-4 and 10-3.

In game one, Asbury came out of the gate hard and scored in every inning. AU posted six runs in the first inning alone. The Eagles added three in the second, another six in the third, one each in the fourth and  fifth, along with two in the sixth.

The W got its first run of the day when Johnny Stechfield (1-3) scored on a balk in the second inning. In the top half of the fourth, Tyler Estabrook (1-4) slapped an RBI single. Colton Neal (1-1) followed with a two-RBI single of his own.

Sophomore right-hander Loren Cox (0-3) – a former Caledonia High School product -  went 3.0 innings and took the loss.

In the second contest, freshman Robby Canten (1-3) threw four scoreless innings before the Eagles swooped in for four runs in the fifth to chase the righty. Tyler Temple tossed the final 3.1 innings.

With a four-run deficit, the Owls began to whittle away at the margin. Tanner Evans' (0-4) ground-out RBI in the sixth inning finally got The W on the board in game two.

In the Owls' half of the seventh, Matthew Windham (0-3) had a sacrifice fly that plated Setchfield (1-4). Jake Williams (1-3) belted his first home run of the season to right-center to draw MUW within a single run, 4-3.

But Asbury would add three runs in each the seventh and eighth innings to create distance between themselves and the surging Owls.

Cole Evans led The W offense, going 2-for-3. Evans also scored once.
