Box Score 3 ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Mississippi University for Women baseball was swept in its three-game series at Fontbonne University over the weekend, in a match-up of future St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opponents. The Owls (2-16) – who will join the SLIAC in 2023-24 – were defeated by the Griffins (14-8) by scores of 15-2 and 5-3 in Saturday's doubleheader, and then 12-7 on Sunday.
In game one of the series, The W found itself overwhelmed from the beginning, as FU scored five times in the bottom of the first and added on from there. The Owls had five hits on the day, two from leadoff man
Matthew Windham (2-4).
In game two, however, MUW allowed three runs in the first again. But this time, The W starter
Landon Clark bowed his neck and did not allow another run through his 6.1 innings of work.
With Clark keeping the Griffins at bay from the mound, the Owls clawed their way back into the game at the plate. After scoring a run on a sacrifice fly from
Austin Telano (0-3) in the first, MUW added single runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Windham (2-4) and another in the seventh to knot the game at 3-3, following a run-scoring triple by
Baker Watson (1-2).
But hope went to heartbreak for The W in the bottom of the seventh when a two-run homer by Fontbonne gave the hosts the walk-off win. MUW reliever
Tyler Temple absorbed the loss.
In the Sunday finale, it was a repeat performance. In the top of the first, the Owls plated a pair of runs on an RBI single from
Avery Benson (1-5) and a sacrifice bunt from
Tanner Evans. But the bottom of the first again saw the Griffins tally five runs.
Fontbonne added one in the second and another five in the sixth inning. In between, Windham (3-5) had another RBI single for the Owls.
Down 11-3, The W tried to mount an eighth-inning rally. After scoring an unearned run, Windham then slugged his third home run of the season, a two-run blast. An RBI single from Telano (1-4) made it 11-7 before the rally was halted.
Despite the losses, the emergence of Windham has been a bright spot for the Owls. The big freshman from Calera, Ala., had a noteworthy weekend. Windham went an aggregate 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate, scored three times and drove in five runs. He had a double and a homer among his hits.
