Box Score IRVING, Texas – After not playing a game in a full week, the Mississippi University for Women was unable to get either its pitching or offense to gel in a 16-3 loss at the University of Dallas on Friday. The loss dropped the W to 2-4 on the year, while the Crusaders improved to 4-7.
Freshman
Robby Canten – entering the game with The W's top earned run average of 0.90 for 10.0 innings of the young season – struggled from the outset versus UD. Canten worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first but, when he again loaded the sacks in the second, he was not as fortunate. By the time that the second-inning dust had settled, the Crusaders had plated seven runs (all charged to Canten, but just three earned) and chased Canten after 1.2 innings of work. He allowed four hits and walked five batters in his stint.
Dallas also had a nine-run fourth frame in the run-rule shortened contest.
The Owls managed six hits and finally broached the scoreboard with a three-run fifth.
Austin Telano was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and went to second on
Baker Watson's bunt single. Then with one out,
Tanner Evans laced an RBI double that plated Telano and Watson stopping at third.
That brought up catcher
Avery Benson. The W's backstop slugged a double of his own that drove home both Watson and Evans and make it the 16-3 final.
Telano,
CJ Wise, and
Tyler Estabrook accounted for MUW's other three hits.
The teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
