IRVING, Texas – Mississippi University for Women lost its Sunday doubleheader at the University of Dallas and, thus, was swept in the three game series, as well. The Owls fell in the twinbill by scores of 4-3 and 13-1.
In the first game, The W found itself down 1-0 heading into the top half of the fifth.
Austin Telano led off the Owls' at-bats with a single and was sacrificed to second.
Matthew Windham (2-4) smacked his second double of the game to drive in Telano and tie it at 1-1. Then, with two out,
Tyler Estabrook's (2-5) RBI single plated Windham with the go-ahead run, 2-1.
The lead was short-lived, however. The Crusaders also tallied in their half of the fifth frame to knot the contest, 2-2.
In the top of the seventh, the Owls retook the lead. Windham struck out, but the wild pitch bounced away from the catcher and Windham easily made it to first.
Baker Watson singled to right and Windham breezed into third base. Estabrook again delivered a run-scoring single to make it 3-2 in favor of the Owls.
Starting pitcher
Campbell McCluney threw a strong 7.0 innings. He scattered seven hits and permitted just one earned run in his stint.
With the lead, The W looked to
Landon Clark (0-1) to close out matters the final two innings. Clark quickly retired the Crusaders in order in the eighth. But the ninth proved to be another story, as Dallas sent five men up without any being retired, resulting in two runs and the walk-off win over The W.
In game two, it was a case of the Owls scoring first, but the Crusaders scoring more often. MUW had a two-out rally in the first inning when
Avery Benson (2-3) and
Johnny Setchfield (1-3) had back-to-back doubles that gave MUW the early advantage.
But the hosts would storm back and scored in every inning, putting up crooked numbers in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
MUW starter
Loren Cox (0-1) went 2.0 innings and was charged with five runs, just three of which were earned. Cox struck out two, but walked four Crusaders. Four relievers followed Cox to the mound for The W.
