WILMORE, Ky. – It may not have been on par with finding a unicorn, but Mississippi University for Women and Asbury University played to the uncommon baseball result of a tie, 4-4, on Friday afternoon. The Owls (5-23-1) and Eagles (20-13-1) saw their rubber game of the three-game series called after two pitches in the seventh – reverting back to the sixth inning – after weather moved into the area and did not subside.
In the top of the first,
Austin Telano (0-1) drew a two-out walk and, eventually, advanced to third on a two-base throwing error on a pick-off attempt. As it turned out, it didn't matter which base Telano occupied when the next batter,
Avery Benson (1-2), smashed a mammoth home run to right field.
It was Benson's third round-tripper of the season and gave MUW a 2-0 early lead.
Asbury answered with a single run in the first. One of the most crucial plays of the game happened in the bottom of the second and MUW clinging to a 2-1 cushion, but is barely noticeable in the box score. The Eagles had the potential tying run on second with two out. A base hit to right followed and Asbury's Colton Perkins rounded third and headed home. But Owls' outfielder
Johnny Setchfield (1-2, 2B) came up throwing and delivered a perfect strike to catcher
Chandler Anderson (0-2), who tagged out Perkins on the head-first slide to save MUW a run.
In the third, the Eagles scored three times to wrest the lead from the Owls, 4-3.
That score stood until the sixth. The W would load the bases with two out, as well as plate the tying run, without the benefit of a hit. Anderson, Setchfield, and
Landon Clark all drew walks to bring up freshman
Matthew Windham. Seeing the struggles of AU hurler Brody Bearden, a patient Windham was also able to coax a base-on-balls from the Eagles' right-hander, forcing in Anderson for an RBI and the 4-4 score.
MUW's
Tyler Temple threw all 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits. He gave up just two earned runs and did not walk a batter. striking out one.
