Owls gain another road split at Asbury

WILMORE, Ky.- For the second-consecutive date, the Mississippi University for Women split a doubleheader. The Owls (5-23) lost their first game at Asbury (20-13), 11-9, before bouncing back to take the second, 10-7.

After not having won a road game prior this season The W has now won two of its last three games on the opponent's home turf, as well.

In game one, MUW found itself trailing 7-1 after two innings and down 9-6 through five. But the Owls posted a three-spot in the sixth to tie it at 9-9. Avery Benson and Tyler Estabrook each had RBI singles in the sixth, before Tanner Evans came home on a wild pitch.

However, the Eagles would plate a pair of runs in their half of the sixth versus MUW reliever Joseph Gantt (0-2) to provide the winning margin in the seven-inning opening game.

Chandler Anderson (2-5), Benson (2-2, walk), Estabrook (2-4), and Landon Clark (2-3, walk) all had multi-hit games for The W. Benson, Estabrook, and Austin Telano (1-5) each drove in two runs.

Jake Williams (1-3) also slugged a solo home run in the fourth.

In game two, The W broke open a 2-2 deadlock with a five-run fifth inning and never looked back, despite some anxious moments. Asbury got to within 7-6 in the seventh and had the potential tying run come to the plate in the ninth.

One area that certainly didn't create any anxiety was the effort of sophomore starter – and former Caledonia High School product - Loren Cox. Cox (1-3) had what was his best outing of the year in five starts, picking up his first win. Entering the game with an ERA north of 21.00, Cox went a strong 5.0 innings and allowed five hits, along with three earned runs. He struck out three Eagles in his stint.

Campbell McCluney earned his first save as an Owl, with 2.0 innings of relief as MUW's third pitcher of the game.

The Owls' offense was bolstered by Telano and Landon Clark, who each slugged their first home runs of the year in the win. Telano and Clark both drove in two runs, but it was teammate Johnny Setchfield (1-3) who was credited with three RBI.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Friday at 12 p.m.
