MONTGOMERY, Ala. – For the fourth time since women's soccer was introduced as a sport at Mississippi University for Women, the team suffered a loss at the hands – rather,
feet – of regional-rival Huntingdon College. The Owls (1-1) fell to the Hawks (2-2), 1-0, to hand MUW its first setback of 2023.
While there isn't a column for "moral victories," The W ladies can find some consolation of battling HC close for 90 minutes, after losing by identical 3-0 scores the past two meetings versus the Hawks. Statistically, the teams were fairly even. Huntingdon had one more shot, overall (14-13), than the Owls and was up 9-7 for shots-on-goal for the day. Each team had six corner kicks, as well.
In the nets, MUW's goalkeeping tandem of
Olivia Clark and
Alex Moon each had four saves in their respective halves of work. Huntingdon amassed seven total saves.
The lone goal of the match came in the 23rd minute and was charged to Clark. The Hawks were turned away the final 67 minutes of the contest.
In the final 10 minutes alone, MUW took three shot attempts. Two tries – by
Gracie Francisco and
Abby Warchus – were on-goal, but turned away by HC's Libby Williams.
The W will look to return to the win column on Wednesday (Sept. 13/3 p.m.) when it travels to Talladega College.
