Men’s Soccer edged out by Freed-Hardeman, 3-2, in home opener

COLUMBUS, Miss. -  After holding visiting Freed-Hardeman University scoreless in the opening half, Mississippi University for Women men's soccer came out on he short end of a 3-2 final score at the Roger Short Soccer Complex.  The Owls fell to 0-4-1, while the Lions raised their record to 4-2-2.
 
After the scoreless 45-minute opening half, it was The W that scored first in the 50th minute. Miguel Hernandez tallied his first goal of 2023, with Kai VanCourt and DJ McElory on the double assist.
 
Unfortunately for the Owls, that advantage did not last long, as FHU tied the match in the 53rd minute, 1-1.
 
MUW newcomer Mo Diallo wasted little time in helping his team regain the upper hand. Diallo's first goal of 2023 came at the 55:48 juncture.
 
But just as in The W's first goal of the night, the Lions pounced and knotted matters at 2-2 just over thee minutes later. Freed-Hardeman netted the match-winning goal in the 77th minute for the 3-2 final score.
 
FHU had an 18-5 advantage in total shot attempts, 10-3 on-goal.
 
Zach Seymour had seven saves for the Owls. Seymour played all 90 minutes in The W net.
 
MUW will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 15, at home hosting Oakwood University. Kickoff at the Roger Short Soccer Complex will be at 3 p.m. (following the 1 p.m. women's match versus OU).
